Our favourite ferry crossing is overnight from Portsmouth to St Malo with Brittany ferries (www.brittany-ferries.co.uk). After breakfast on board, a 4 hour drive with a pit stop for coffee, arriving in Gemozac in the afternoon. But, the choice is yours. Listed below are a few options which you can consider before booking your travel.

Dover - Calais either via the Chunnel www.eurotunnel.com or low cost ferry see www.ferrysavers.com. The drive from Calais is about 7 - 8 hours

Portsmouth - Le Havre - www.ldlines.co.uk is a relatively new ferry company which offers cost effective travel. From Le Havre the journey is approximately 6 hours

Portsmouth - Caen see www.brittany-ferries.co.uk. Approximately 5 hours from Caen.

www.mappy.com provides a route planner from wherever you start your journey and gives valuable information about toll charges and where the speed cameras are situated.

Remember there is no rush in France and you are on holiday! You will find the roads easy to drive on with none of the pressure which you get on English roads. But beware, the Gendarmes are hot on speeding drivers, so keep to the limits!
